5 wire stepper motors

Ok started stripping down the two scanners I have and one of them has a 5 wire motor! a quick search of the interweb to check its a stepper, then a bit of googlefu to out if ramps 1.4 will run a unipolar stepper (hark at me sounding like I know what I'm talking about) and I found a few blog posts on converting a them to 4 wire, so quick few cuts with a craft knife and i have a nice 4 wire motor.

red wire goes between top middle and bottom middle pins connection cut so just need to remove red wire. 

Poor man's 3d printer.

OK a few of the guys I regularly watch on YouTube (Mokanaman  RichterScaleStudios) have brought themselves 3d printers, and very nice they are too. But no matter how much fun they look spending £500-£1000 on one is just way out of my budget. So what to do?
Build my own of course! OK what do you need?

OK looking good so far! First steps get some parts.
Posted a wanted ad on my local freecycle and within a week had:
2 scanners
1 Epson printer
1 Lexmark printer
1 Brother laser printer
And an old desktop base unit.
So hopefully some useful parts there.

After looking online I'm thinking of going for something between these two designs
